I want to thank the Canton RTC, audience members, and Dan Lovallo for a great forum last night in Canton. I was very proud to be one of the twelve GOP candidates there seeking support for the August primaries and sharing our ideas of how to get government working again for the people of this country instead of the other way around! I believe that our message of ‘Common Sense for Connecticut’ is resonating with the voters of this state and I look forward to speaking with as many people as possible going forward.
Since announcing our campaign on November 7th of last year, we have been able to showcase many of our issues and I am pleased to have the other candidates in the race follow our lead. Two weeks ago in Newtown, the other four candidates each made a public pledge to only serve a specific number of years in Congress if elected. If this can be done in the other 434 Congressional races as well, we have solved the problem of career politicians without a single vote or court challenge. I believe it was one thing to say you are not a career politician, but it is better to never become one!
Also, in my speech last November, I said that I would not take a Congressional Pension if elected if the budget was not balanced. Last night in Canton, each of us signed a pledge that we would refuse the Congressional Pension if elected and I think we all agree that Public Service is exactly that. Again, if we can get this same pledge 434 more times, another longstanding problem with Washington DC, and the deficit of trust on issues like this that average Americans have with their politicians, just might be solved!
I know that when we began this campaign just three months ago, the political bosses and insiders were not happy and we knew it would be an uphill battle. I also know that the reason we decided to shake things up was to give a voice to the people who career politicians and the DC establishment have mostly ignored except during election years. I assure you that they are not only listening to all of us now, but are also trying to keep up with us on important issues.
Going forward, our campaign can use any help you can give us including volunteering time and donating money to help get our message out. I look forward to meeting many of you as I travel the 5th District and as always, please email me directly at BillEvans@BillEvansForCongress.com if you have any questions. As George in Meriden told me, I am one of the few politicians who will get back to you!
