Bill Evans on the Economy

The current economic situation we find ourselves in doesn’t require any complex schemes or economic formulas to resolve.  What we need are common sense tax cuts that reward work and innovation and encourage more of it.  Currently, many politicians find the easiest way to get votes is to pit business owners against their workers or the rich against the poor.  Prior to owning my own business, I had many jobs and none of the people who hired me were poor. While some of my bosses were very wealthy, most of them were people who started their own businesses and through hard work and sacrifice were able to achieve what we call the American Dream! When these people were ultimately successful in finding a better way than their competition to deliver goods and services, it was reflected not only in increased wealth for them, but also increased employment for other people, including myself.  The success of both the employer and employee then generated more taxes for local, state, and federal governments.  To vilify employers or wish for their failure is not only against what I was taught about the American Dream growing up, but also not in the best interest of growing our economy.  Many of the people who began by working for others have also been able to eventually pursue their own version of the American Dream.  That is what has made this country great and will help us become a prosperous nation again.  I strongly believe we are better off as a nation if people are working and paying taxes, rather than not working and receiving benefits from the government.  This has the potential to drain self esteem and often leads to dependence on an ever growing government.

Currently many of the people who have suffered the most in this current economic crisis are the poorest and youngest among us who take entry level jobs.  These jobs are some of the hardest hit in this current economic crisis and need to be brought back quickly.  Not only do these jobs provide a source of income, but also a sense of pride and training in the skills needed to get a better job in the future.  Unlike the economy of 50 or 100 year ago, people today move between jobs more easily as better opportunities arise.  Many of today’s millionaires and billionaires learned the work ethic that helped create incredible wealth from a job they had years earlier.

I strongly believe cutting taxes and allowing people to keep more of the money they earn, rather than it being taken by the Federal Government and then handed back out to special interests or campaign donors through various schemes, will help get this country back on the right path.  Common sense tells me that the people who earn the money will spend it more wisely and effectively than a bureaucrat in Washington, DC. I believe this will help get the economy rolling again and ensure that every child born today has the same opportunity that I had growing up.
